Little stumble with styled components

Iā€™d been seeing ā€œcaching issuesā€ for a while with this site. Whenever I deployed it, it would show outdated styles, and on refresh turn back to what I expected.

Ah, cache invalidationā€¦ the hardest thing in software engineering.

Right?

Well, I havenā€™t found cache invalidation to be that hard, probably because tooling has improved so much. But as it turns out, my issue wasnā€™t related to caching at all. The symptoms were just similar.

A few weeks ago, I updated my site to use styled components, and I didnā€™t realise I needed a plugin for it to work correctly with Gatsby. So it looked fine on the dev server, but the build is server side rendered, so it fell apart.

Once I realised that was the issue, it was piece of cake to fix. Because Gatsby docs are awesome, they had a detailed explanation of styling a Gatsby site with styled components.

So all I had to do was an npm install. Whoops! šŸ˜…

PS: that means my dark mode is not working as I intended. Because of SSR, it renders the light theme by default and switches as you move around. Gonna have to dig a little to sort that one out šŸ›
